What is hypnosis?

Hypnosisis the name given to the process of altering your state of consciousness in order to achieve a specific outcome. Other names for altering your state of consciousness include meditation, praying, reading, watching TV, having a conservation.

The activity of our brain, known as brain waves, is measured in Hertz (cycles per second usually abbreviated to Hz). Each brain wave state represents a different state of consciousness. We induce different brain waves states depending on the functions we are carrying out:

Brain Wave States*

Function

Beta 12-15Hz to 20-25Hz

Attention focused on activities on the external world – utilising our conscious mind

Alpha 6-14Hz

Daydreaming, meditation, most hypnosis

Theta 4-8Hz

Thought emotional experiences recorded here, deep meditation, high creativity

Delta 3-5 Hz

Deep sleep, total unconsciousness, very deep meditation

Hypnosis takes place during the Alpha range – crossing into the Beta range of motion.
When attention is narrowed during these states of consciousness – it is thought that the subconscious is more receptive to suggestions.

What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy which takes place using hypnosis at a time when the mind is in an altered but completely comfortable and controlled state of consciousness.  While in the hypnotic state, I’m able to help clients to explore their minds and tackle deep rooted issues.

Hypnotherapy has a long presence in ancient history and in more recent times has been used successfully in place of analgesia during surgical procedures.  Today hypnosis is used for almost everything from smoking cessation through to management of diabetes and hypno-birthing.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?
Hypnotherapy is a process and as such all sessions will be different.  At the first session generally we’ll discuss your reasons for coming to see me, the ways I can assist you, and time permitting introduce you to some hypnosis.  During most hypnotherapy processes, you’ll also be taught self-hypnosis.

Whilst under hypnosis, you should feel relaxed and pleasant feeling, you may find your mind drifting, but you will be able to hear everything I say, as you would say in a guided meditation.  You are completely in control and can open your eyes, talk to me or stand up at any time.
